firecakes

another artisanal chitown donuterie that is worth the calories

There’s no denying that Chicago loves its donuts. There are entire tours dedicated to donut tasting. And whether you’re an old fashioned kind of person or a classic glazed or perhaps even a cake donut lover, Firecakes has got you covered. This homegrown, Midwestern rooted donut shop delivers on style and substance.

They serve up upgraded classics (think: wildflower honey for their take on a glazed donut, and valrhona chocolate for their take on an iced donut) as well as seasonal flavors and what they call “creations on vacation” where the rules go out the door and creativity goes wild (think: margarita, banana split, eggnog, or chocolate mascarpone and fig brulée). They also do mini donuts too, if you’re feeling less indulgent. OR, if you’re feeling like you want to try lots of flavors…

good to know

Go here for: donuts (surprise)

Order this: you really can’t go wrong with one of the classics, but their seasonal specials are always a treat too, and if you’ve really been good, get a donut ice cream sandwich

Amount of time to spend: perfect for a quick pit stop

When to come: mornings are popular, but there usually isn’t a long wait, or an afternoon pick me up

Getting here: Loop location is around the corner from Clark/Lake, River North is a couple blocks from Grand (red line), and Lincoln Park is best accessed by bus (22 and 36), as it’s about a 15 min walk from Fullerton (red, brown, purple).

Other things to note:

  • They also have a truck, named Billy, which drives around the city. Check their Twitter for the latest.
  • They also do donut ice cream sandwiches. As in, you pick your donut flavor and ice cream flavor, sauce and toppings and create the perfect summer treat.
  • They ALSO have a location in Oak Park, if you’re in the suburbs for some reason…
