alfred coffee

about as LA as coffee can get

Can coffee be famous? In LA, it can. Alfred has managed to create a thriving business, and not just on coffee, but on partnerships and advertisements. Their paper cups are like, coveted ad space in LA. Not to mention the fact they’ve reached influencer status on social media. Their tagline, “but first, coffee,” painted proudly over the stairway at their OG Melrose location, has invaded Instagram far beyond LA’s large city limits.

Alfred Coffee is proof that good branding goes a long way. Back in the day, it was all about the mustache. Nowadays, anything goes, but if it’s on an Alfred cup, it’s cool. And the annoying thing is, their coffee is actually good too. So you find yourself day after day taking a detour from your way to work, circling around twice for parking, waiting patiently behind bloggers and Hollywood assistants in a line just long enough to be irritating, for a coffee run that really didn’t have to be that stressful.

But it’s worth it for the Instagram Story it’ll go on, right? (Right, the answer is right).

good to know

Go here for: coffee to go, a casual meeting, a midday break (it’s always fun to escape from work for a bit)

Order this: CBD Matcha drink, Nitro Cold Brew, Oat Milk Matcha, the Pink Drink (you know you want it for the gram), a miso kouign amann (yeah, you read that right), if you’re feeling yourself, maybe one of their famous $10 drinks??

Amount of time to spend: if it’s during rush hour, get in and out as fast as humanly possible. But if for some reason it isn’t crazy, it’s a nice environment to spend an hour or two.

When to come: early in the morning when they just open, or during off hours (late afternoon on a weekday, mornings on weekends)

Parking:

  • (Red) Melrose place is an actual shit show at all times. If you aren’t lucky enough to find a meter, make sure to read all of the signs on both sides of the street in the neighborhoods. The parking enforcement in WeHo has one goal in life and that is to give you a ticket if you are even one minute or one inch off.
  • (Red) Silverlake is also not easy – best bet is to find a meter on Sunset, or look in the residential areas.
  • (Green) Beverly Hills is not too bad. There are plenty of public parking lots. Some have free 2hr parking during the day (before 6pm), others are just a few dollars per hour and then free after 6pm.
  • (Orange) Brentwood can be a hit or miss, depending on the hour. If you’re just picking up, there’s usually some short (15 min) meters.
  • (Orange) K-town is never fun, but during the day on a weekday, it’s usually not too difficult to find street parking within a couple blocks.
  • (Yellow) Studio City isn’t too bad for short term parking, there are plenty of meters along the street, or try the residential streets nearby.

Other things to note:

  • They always have cool partnerships and pop ups happening, check out their collabs page.
  • There’s also randomly one location in Austin at the LINE hotel.
  • If you want to be LA cool without being in LA, check out their merch.
  • If you want to skip the wait, Postmate it for pick up (you’re welcome).
  • Every location has a slightly different menu but here’s the general menu. Certain locations also serve food (think: breakfast burritos, grab-and-go Erewhon salads, you know, the typical LA fare).
what, you don't take beauty shots of your nitro???
