ritual coffee

for your coffee ritual

Ritual Coffee is yet another third wave coffee business in a city full of them. But that is a part of the credibility. Founded in 2005, the face that the coffee shop has weathered over 15 years and grown in this crowded and competitive landscape means it has substance. The woman-owned brand displays its values in every cup. The beans are sustainably sourced from small farms and producers, paying above fair trade prices. Everything is roasted locally at their roastery in SOMA. The cafes are welcoming and inclusive community spaces for all to enjoy coffee. In response to COVID-19, Ritual has been accepting donations and delivering coffee and pastries to frontline workers.

In terms of coffee, they have a variety of options, but specialize in lighter roasts from Central and South America. The cafes offer daily brews, pour overs and a fairly standard set of espresso-based options that can be paired with a Valencia pastry.

good to know

Go here for: your daily coffee fix

Order this: whatever your usual coffee order is, plus a pastry

Amount of time to spend: great for coffee to-go, or to sit and hang for a bit

When to come: Any time

Getting here:

  • Mission: about 2 blocks from the 21st street MUNI station (J)
  • Haight: best bet is probably by bus (Haight & Buena Vista, 7, N).
  • Hayes: about an 8 min walk from Market & Gough station (K, L, N)

Other things to note:

  • They have coffee subscriptions and sell beans by the bag online. They also have instant coffee (they say it’s great for camping but let’s be real, it could probably be great on any old Wednesday as a quick coffee fix).
  • Like many other coffee shops in this city, they do not provide wifi.
