Taipei has no shortage of bakeries, from reputable local chains to neighborhood gems, you don’t have to go far for half decent bread. But few bakeries are vegan, and even fewer are excellent at being vegan. Yiihotang is a part of a collection of vegan brands, Daohe, which applies a philosophy of plant-based, sustainable farm-to-table lifestyle in accessible formats like quick serve restaurants and a perfectly lovely bakery.
Yiihotang is a rare breed. Known for salted butter rolls made from soy butter that is so delicate yet rich that it’s hard to believe it’s vegan. It’s so popular they have to limit the number each customer can buy at a time. They emphasize quality (they mill their own flour and ferment their own vegan butter), but also have quantity with an impressive spread of options ranging from more Asian-style breads to more western inspired. A business committed to living its values, creating all vegan baked goods that are good enough to get non-vegan bread lovers waiting in line for the next batch of bread.
