copenhagen pastry

a well-loved source for beautiful danish pastries

Copenhagen Pastry is no secret. It’s been around for long enough to have a loyal following. It has gotten the approval of the city, with a coveted 5 star Yelp review status. It’s a well-established presence among the best of LA pastries. And yet, somehow, it’s still not overhyped. It is simple, in that wonderful Scandinavian way, slow, artisanal, warm, friendly. You don’t feel rushed when you’re here (perhaps the perfect foil to the Great Porto’s of the east side). It’s never too crowded. It’s usually not hard to just pull up at a meter right in front to drop in.

The bakery is counter serve only, in a quaint standalone building with a bright white exterior and windows that let the LA sun flood in to light up the abundant pastry case. Their selection includes a range of Danish classics, from pastries like kringles and spandauer to breads like rye bread and smørrebrød to sweets like rumkugle and kransecake. They also make classic Danish cakes, like princess cake and otello cake and a particularly decadent apricot chocolate mousse cake, sold as whole 8” cakes. There aren’t many Danish bakeries in this city, so Copenhagen Pastry is always worth a stop when you’re on the 405 near Culver, and well worth a detour if you’re not.

good to know

Go here for: pastries for sharing (seriously, just bring a box to wherever you’re going)

Order this: any of their pastries (but particularly the super light cinnamon roll and the flakey kringle and the poppy twist)

Amount of time to spend: 10-15 minutes is plenty for a quick stop by, probably 5-10 min on a weekday

When to come: earlier in the day for the most selection

Parking: is usually not too bad, they have a tiny lot but the meters on Washington are easy to come by

Other things to note:

  • You can pre-order online (great for bigger orders) and they also have large format pastries perfect for a party.
  • They also have coffee (drip + cold brew only) and tea.
