lulu

a californian restaurant tucked in the middle of a contemporary art museum

Many of LA’s best restaurants are located in nondescript strip malls on drive by sections of long boulevards. Lulu is not one of them. No, Lulu has a pretty idyllic setting. The open air restaurant occupies the ground level and courtyard of the Hammer Museum in Westwood. Surrounded by art galleries and shaded by trees filled with lanterns, the restaurant fits into the elegant context with ease. It almost feels too good to be in the midst of, well, the college town. It gives an IYKYK kind of exclusivity, even though the (underrated) museum is free for all to explore. Lulu is a gem of a restaurant, the kind of place you wish you were cool enough to hang in, among the art appreciators and sustainably-minded food lovers.

The restaurant is a contemporary take on Californian cuisine, as imagined by the legend herself Alice Waters. True to her farm-to-table philosophy, the restaurant’s market menu evolves daily, featuring locally, sustainably sourced ingredients in beautifully composed dishes. The patio atmosphere almost makes it feel deceivingly casual during the day, but perhaps that’s the point: good food doesn’t need to wait for a special occasion, every day, every humble ingredient is worth cherishing.

good to know

Go here for: lunch and an afternoon of art, dinner on a warm evening

Order this: the menu changes daily to feature the freshest ingredients, the easy choice is the prix fixe, but even if you go the a la carte option, save room for dessert

Amount of time to spend: 1-2 hours, so you have some time to check out the galleries as well

When to come: weekday lunches are less crowded, definitely get a reservation for dinners and weekends, or pop by for afternoon drinks and snacks if you want to do a walk in

Parking: there is self parking in the garage under the museum, $8 for 3 hours with validation (and $8 flat rate on evenings and weekends), valet is $10. Or you can try your luck with meters, best bet is probably on Glendon or Tiverton.

Other things to note:

  • Reservations are available via Resy for lunch and dinner, and they do walk-ins for the bar mid-afternoon.
  • Entrance is on Lindbrook Ave.
  • The restaurant is all open to the courtyard, but there are covered tables for the rare rainy day.
