jon & vinny's

LA’s favorite Italian spot

In LA, anything can be famous. One of the most beloved names in the city is perhaps Alfred, who feeds us coffee and tea to fuel our sunny days. Two other names that are celebrities among Angelenos are perhaps Jon and Vinny, of Jon & Vinny’s. The hyped and happening Italian American restaurant has long surpassed cult and classic followings to become an obligatory destination meal associated with LA. A place where you might see a B-list celebrity at one table and an A-list influencer at another. A place that has evolved from “name drop” to a core part of LA vocabulary. A place that has withstood the volatile whims of LA’s restaurant scene over the past decade to actually expand to now have several locations across the city. It seems like something that wouldn’t be hyped anymore, but on any given day, it’ll likely be packed.

The namesake duo behind Sun of a Gun and the recently closed but still iconic Animal opened Jon & Vinny’s in a cozy (for LA standards) space on a bustling block of Fairfax back in 2015. The restaurant brought classic red sauce Italian flavors with some Californian flair and contemporary feel to the LA restaurant scene. Plus a wine shop tucked in the back. Since then, it’s only grown, in reputation and in footprint. The menu has had some changes over the years, but largely stays true to the fan favorites. So whether you are here to see or be seen, or even if you’re just grabbing to go in their iconic green logo pizza boxes, Jon & Vinny’s is a staple that continues to thrive in this wonderful era of LA dining.

good to know

Go here for: a meal where you want to be immersed in the most stereotypical version of LA

Order this: spicy fusilli, LA Woman pizza, White Lightning pizza, cannolis and rainbow cookies for dessert

Amount of time to spend: an hour or two

When to come: it’s a rare breed of restaurant that transitions gracefully from breakfast through dinner, so in theory anytime, but in practice, probably a weekday breakfast or late mid-afternoon lunch would likely be the least crowded

Parking:

  • Fairfax sucks, but during the day you may be able to snag a meter on Fairfax. Otherwise, your best bet is trying to find street parking on the side streets, just watch out for signs.
  • Brentwood can also be tough, meters are hard to come by on San Vicente, but there should be free street parking on Montana or S Westgate.
  • Slauson is superior because it has a little parking lot of its own.
  • Beverly Hills has ample parking in the public lots along Santa Monica Blvd.

Other things to note:

  • They take reservations via Resy, which would be highly recommend for dinner or peak lunch hours.
  • They also host private event pizza classes and Helen’s wine classes.
