fat and flour

all you need in life, or at least, in pie

Once there was a cute little shop called Fiona on a crowded block of Fairfax, famed for their pies and pastries and the woman behind it all, Nicole Rucker, formerly of LA’s beloved Gjelina. Fiona is no longer, sadly, but we’ve been gifted with Fat and Flour instead. For a while, it was in pre-order and pop up mode before it found a new physical footprint Downtown. The little takeaway stand is cute as can be, and yet still easily missed amid the chaotic visual scene of Grand Central Market.

Fat and Flour goes all in on the pastry: the nostalgic rustic Americana baking, classic pies and decadent cookies line the pastry case. The stall may be small, but the brand looms large, because those who know are willing to even brave Downtown traffic to get their pie fix. Whether you’re looking for a little pick me up treat or becoming everyone’s favorite person by bringing pie to the party, Fat and Flour has quickly become a fixture in the LA bakery scene, and one we hope will stick around for a while.

good to know

Go here for: fulfilling a pie craving, grabbing some treats to go, checking off dessert at your next dinner party

Order this: go for the chess pie, chocolate is a classic but their seasonal flavors always hit, key lime is also a fan favorite

Amount of time to spend: 15-20 min, probably best for takeaway, it gets crowded in there

When to come: any time you crave pie, but maybe not too late in the day, they may sell out

Parking: the adjacent lot is $4 for 90 minutes, and has a daily maximum of $25, best bet if you aren’t lucky enough to get a meter somewhere is to find an all day lot (many are less than $25) and spend the day downtown

Other things to note: If you want to do a quick stop by, pre-order online. They have same day orders for slices and cookies and pre-orders for whole pies.
