fine craft 🤝 luxury fashion house

This spring, the Noguchi Museum hosted a showcase for the finalists of the LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize. The 2023 edition had 30 finalists, representing a variety of mediums and countries. From ceramics to textiles to furniture to jewelry, each work showed craft and creativity in highly personal ways from delightfully whimsical to meticulously intricate.

This exhibition represented the first time the Noguchi Studio (the artist’s former studio, which is located right across the street from the main museum) was used for a public exhibition.

a few of them looked straight out of a psychedelic dream

others were deceivingly intricate and delicate, using the properties of the medium itself to build into simple shapes that upon closer look seem to be made from a million little pieces

the winning piece truly was a pinnacle of craftsmanship, with tiny and thin pieces of ceramics building up into what emulates an organic shape created by evolution and nature.

The award is in its 8th year, and continues to celebrate modern craftsmanship and show how it is still so core to culture today, at its finest levels.

The finalists works were incredible to see up close, and learning about the process was an inspiring reminder that art and craft still lives on in our digital world.
