autumn at the farmers market

seasonal produce with some (pumpkin) spice

Autumn at the farmers market is special. I for one am partial for spring and summer produce, but even I can’t deny the allure of a brisk fall morning, hot coffee and empty tote in hand, slightly overwhelmed by the number of kinds of apples that exist. And gourds, so many gourds in every shape and size. The inevitable giant pumpkins that no one in NYC has any business purchasing anyways. Vendors selling local maple syrup. Jugs of cider. And fresh cider donuts to round out the experience.

that fall color palette with the dry cool weater really just draws you into the seasonal cheer in a way that only a 4 season destination can do

Hearty greens ready to be braised, root vegetables of every varietal waiting to be roasted. I have a soft spot for the mini versions of everything. The tiniest honeynut squashes, tiny potatoes of every color, decorative pumpkins that can sit in your palm.

No trip to the farmers market is complete without the temptation to decorate your house with seasonal bouquets and wondering if it is too early to buy a wreath, and whether that would work well with pumpkins on the stoop, and if it would be wasteful to buy an herb wreath.

The haul ended up including a little bit of everything and a mix of late summer and early fall produce. Delicata and honey nut squash, colorful cauliflower, kohlrabi and a head of radicchio. And of course an obligatory variety of apples, and a (not pictured) jug of cider to round it out.
