dashi okume + cibone

50 norman: a well curated bit of japan in brooklyn

Ok so technically these are two separate establishments, but they do share a space and together make for a wonderful Japanese corner of Greenpoint. Stepping inside feels like being transported into an artisanal shop in a hipster part of Kyoto. Whether you’re a lover of culinary goods or sucker for pretty homeware, 50 Norman is the place to be.

Dashi Okume is an artisanal dashi shop and grocer that has roots in the Tokyo Central Wholesale Market dating back to the 1800s. This Brooklyn shop carries a curated selection of packaged Japanese pantry staples, including several dashi blends (in tea bags for easy use). And if you’re feeling up for it, you can make your own custom dashi, selecting the various dried fish, kombu and aromatics to be fresh ground and packaged. In the back, they have a restaurant with Japanese breakfast service as well.

Cibone occupies the other half of the space. This half feels as much like a gallery as it is a shop: filled with beautiful ceramics, homeware and decorative pieces that could elevate any room. The well curated inventory is always changing, and they often host exhibitions featuring Japanese and local artists throughout the year.
