sey coffee

some of the best in the city

Despite its location on a fairly nondescript block of an industrial part of Bushwick (ahem, the part that realtors love to brand as “East Williamsburg”), SEY coffee has a reputation that far exceeds its neighborhood. You’ll see their beans brewed at trendy coffee shops all around the world, and traveling coffee enthusiasts will go well out of their way to visit the cafe. They take their coffee seriously here, the coffee beans are sourced from sustainable producers around the world, and roasted in house. The coffee served changes seasonally, and the baristas are always happy to explain the daily selections make recommendations on the flavor profiles. Each cup is expertly crafted and served in a way that makes you savor each sip (something about the coffee + water on a little tray just really makes it feel more special), and they have a well-stocked pastry case to pair with a bite.

On any given day, the bright airy, plant-filled and skylight lit space will be filled with people, pups and cups of coffee. On a nice day, the garage style door is rolled all the way up and the coffee shop is one with the bustling neighborhood that comes to life midday as the shops and restaurants open up and pedestrians wander through. Brooklyn at its best.

good to know

Go here for: a morning coffee run, a solo midday pick me up, coffee with a small group of friends

Order this: get whatever you usually order, but unless you’re a die-hard espresso lover, definitely check out their pourover selection, and iced coffee

Amount of time to spend: 15 min for takeaway (there can be a bit of a line on weekends), or longer if you’re enjoying coffee to stay

When to come: visit during the weekdays for a more relaxed and laid-back atmosphere, or join the weekend coffee loving crowd but don’t be surprised if seats are hard to come by

Getting here: just a few minutes walk from the Morgan L station.

Other things to note:

  • For a place that specializes in coffee, they have a decent selection of teas, mostly Chinese teas, and a couple herbal infusion options as well.
  • In addition to their retail selection and wholesale business, they have an online coffee subscription perfect for those who appreciate an at-home coffee ritual or don’t live in Brooklyn.
  • There is wifi and some laptops on weekdays, but the seating situation and popularity makes it not great for working.
