the four horsemen

a food lover’s favorite wine bar

The Four Horsemen is a wine bar in Williamsburg that just so happens to have really good food. Like Michelin worthy good food. So maybe it’s a tiny restaurant that just so happens to have a killer wine list and be partially owned by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. To be honest it doesn’t matter. Space wise, it’s pretty 50/50 bar to dining room. Point is, The Four Horsemen is always a solid choice. Located on a fairly quiet block of Grand St, it’s one of those if you know you know places. I guess a lot of people know now, so it’s not so much a secret, it just has subtle signage making it easy to miss (you know it from all the hip & cool crowd). Plus it’s far enough to be safe from the crowds that hang around Bedford (they usually don’t trickle over that far from the water).

Physically, The Four Horsemen is little more than a bar with seats around it and a few tables squeezed in the back. Thankfully with outdoor seating there’s slightly more real estate for tables, though the wait will still be significant. The menu is tightly curated and changes often but doesn’t miss, and of course the wine list extensive (57-pages!). So come for the wine stay for the food, or vice versa. You’ll leave satisfied either way.

good to know

Go here for: an intimate dinner date (but srsly don’t come here with more than 2-3 other people it’s too small), a very cute lunch, a low key meal that shows you have taste

Order this: the menu changes often but some highlights include the crispy potato (it’s the kind that just feels luxurious), tuna with yuzu kosho, kobocha squash, lacinato kale salad; ask the servers for wine recommendations (and food recommendations for that matter) they are very thoughtful with their personalized suggestions

Amount of time to spend: a couple hours, this is the kind of place you’ll want to hang around for a bit

When to come: lunch hours are definitely more chill (Friday-Sunday only) for walk ins, or early dinners earlier in the week weekday dinners, plan ahead and snag a reservation for peak dinner time

Getting here: take the JMZ to Marcy and walk about 8 minutes up Marcy til you hit Grand and it’s a block and a half up; or take the L or G to Metropolitan Lorimer and follow Metropolitan to the other side of the BQE towards Havemeyer, turn left and then right onto Grand (also about a 6-7 min walk)

Other things to note:

  • They take reservations via Resy. Very much recommended.
  • Their menu is short so while there are usually a couple vegetarian dishes, there may be limited options for those with dietary restrictions.
