win son bakery

your local taiwanese american bakery and cafe

An offshoot of the popular Win Son restaurant across the street, Win Son Bakery is the all day counterpart. A casual, quick serve restaurant under the guise of a bakery and cafe, but so much more. Their menu is not long, but has enough to span gracefully from day to night. From coffee, tea and fun Taiwanese-inspired pastries for morning coffee runs, to burgers and fried chicken and cocktails and Taiwan beer for a casual dinner. And of course, their claim to Brooklyn food scene fame, their take on a Taiwanese breakfast.

Sure, its no dou jiang breakfast hole in wall in Taiwan, but in this part of Brooklyn, it’s a privilege to be shelling out for a decidedly, delightfully, inauthentic Taiwanese breakfast spread. There’s the obligatory sweet and savory soy milk, which come with the necessary deep fried youtiao. And of course, fantuan, which isn’t a build your own type of situation, but does come in pork floss and vegetarian versions. And then a selection of breakfast sandwiches on scallion pancakes, because what could make bacon egg and cheese better than a flaky, savory, oniony pastry. The bright space on any given day is bustling with activity, neighborhood locals grabbing orders to go, and the many people who venture past Bedford for the meal (worth it).

good to know

Go here for: a casual breakfast or lunch, a coffee/tea little treat

Order this: a scallion pancake breakfast sandwich (the radish cake one is solid), a fan tuan (I tend to go for the vegetarian version), soy milk, and a canele, which they make with Kavalan whiskey

Amount of time to spend: 15 minutes for takeaway, 30 min – an hour for a quick meal

When to come: weekdays are more laidback during brunchy times, but even with weekend crowds service is pretty fast

Getting here: just a couple blocks from the Montrose L train station.

Other things to note:

  • They offer a variety of gluten-free and vegan options.
  • They often have seasonal specials, like ice cream in the summers.
  • There is indoor and outdoor seating, but fills up fast on weekends.
